Tenses

Chapter 1
Definition Tenses
In grammar, tense means time. The tense of a verb indicates the time of the action or the time of the state of condition .  The time is not always the same as that indicated by the name of the tense. The time tell you when the action happened, either in the past, in the present, or in the future.

Examples of Tenses

1) Present Tense

a)  Simple Present Tense
·        Mrs. Anna sometimes teaches English in the afternoon.
·        Nana speaks English fluently.
·        The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
·        Does he often come here with her ?
·        I play football every week.

b) Present Continuous Tense
·        My brothers are watching television now.
·        The children are studying their home work  at the moment.
·        Are they seeing a movie tonight ?
·        My grandfather is always losing his walking stick.
·        We are visiting him tonight.

c)  Present Perfect Tense
·        She has just finished her home work.
·        I have just called him.
·        Mr. Edward has lived in California for ten years.
·        I haven’t seen you for weeks. Where have you been ?
·        She has often visited the museum before.

d) Present Perfect Continuous Tense
·        My uncle has been living in Bandung since 1970.
·        We hve been waiting for him for two hours.
·        Oh, here is my key! I’ve been looking for it all day.
·        She has been working at that company for three years.
·        What have you been doing for the last 30 minutes?

2) Past Tense

a)  Simple Past Tense
·        They were not here yesterday.
·        Did you come to her house last night ?
·        When you did buy that camera ?
·        My uncle bought this house from a friend of my father.
·        Mr. Cooper live in Bandung for  long time.

b) Past Continuous Tense
·        They were discussing sometimes for hours.
·        My brother was sleeping soundly.
·        What were you doing before you came here ?
·        What were you doing when the earthquake started?
·        I was listening to my iPod, so I didn't hear the fire alarm.

c)  Past Perfect Tense
·        I wasn’t hungry. I had just had lunch.
·        The house was very dirty. We hadn’t cleaned it for weeks.
·        My uncle had been in the army for twenty years in 1990.
·        Bill was in hospital. He had broken his leg in an accident.
·        They would have come here if he hadn’t forgotten to invite them last Sunday.

d) Past Perfect Continuous Tense
·        We had been studying the homework for an hour when they came.
·        I have been waiting here for an hour when my friends finally appeared.
·        He had been looking  for his missing bike.
·        He had been trying over and over again to solve the problem.
·        She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.

3) Future Tense

a)  Present Future Tense
·        Our uncle will visit us next Sunday.
·        I’m sure Billy will call us soon.
·        We will go there when it stops raining.
·        They will come there if you invite them.
·        You will help him later.

b) Future Continuous Tense
·        My brother will be playing tennis at nine tomorrow morning.
·        Will they be doing same thing at seven tonight ?
·        She will be helping Anna tomorrow.
·        What will you be doing tomorrow morning ?
·        What time will they be having dinner tonight ?
c)  Present Future Perfect Tense
·        Everyone will have been here by tomorrow morning.
·        By the end of this month, he will have finished the report.
·        I shall have gone to bed by the time my parents come home.
·        He will have finished reading the novel by the end of this month.
·        We shall have got home by the dinner time.
d) Present Future Perfect Continuous Tense
·        We will have been attending the English course here for six months by next month.
·       We shall have been studying for two hours before our father comes from the office.
·        She will have been sleeping for some hours by the time we get home.
·       You will have been waiting for more than two hours when her plane finally arrives.
·       Will you have been waiting for more than two hours when her plane finally arrives?

4) Past Future Tense

a)  Simple Past  Future Tense
·        We would come his house but it rained very hard that night.
·        I would call you at that time but I forgot your phone number.
·        We won’t go there if it should rain tonight.
·        Would you like to have a cup of coffee ?
·        I would like to try this shirt on, please ?
b) Past  Future Continuous Tense
·        He would be reading the novel from seven to ten last night.
·        My mother would be preparing breakfast at this hour yesterday morning.
·       They shouldn’t be sitting here chatting. They should be attending the math class now.
·       He was sure his friends wouldn’t be discussing the problem at eight to ten thet day.
·       They told me thet they would be waiting for me there around seven yesterday morning.

c)  Past Future Perfect Tense
·        He would have built the house by July last year.
·        My uncle have moved to Solo by the end of May two years ago.
·        You should have finished the task yesterday.
·        She would come here if you hadn’t forgotten to invite her yesterday.
·        I would have entered the SMU before my older brother graduated from the university three years ago.

d) Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense
·       My sister would have been working in that company for two years by the time I entered the university five years ago.
·       Henry should have been studying for the examination last night, he should not have been playing tennis with his friends.
·       Where would have the students been studying if the teacher had not come?
·        Rose will have been studying for two hours if she did not watch a serial drama.
·        The students would have not been watching a movie if the school had ended faster.
